With the New Year, comes new resolutions, new goals and of course, new fashion trends. New trends can sometimes be overwhelming but here are five winter fashion tips or trends to incorporate into your 2017 winter wardrobe. TurtlenecksThe turtleneck is definitely a classic and is quite versatile in the ways that you can style it. It doesn't have to be limited to just a boring piece of clothing and you can make it suit you no matter what your body type is. Combine your turtleneck with a chunky statement necklace or try wearing it under a dress where just the neck and arms of the turtleneck are exposed. Platform heelsThese heels are definitely a flashback to the 70's and then again the 90's. They can be funky and sophisticated while being way more comfortable to walk in than traditional stilettos. Patent leather is a great option for braving the slushy streets this winter. Trooper HatsTrooper hats have always been present and trendy in winter attire, but they have been making a stronger comeback recently. These hats serve both fashion and functionality because they keep you warm while looking fabulous. The best way to wear your hair with this hat is in a low bun, low ponytail, or just wear your hair down. LeggingsWe've come a long way with leggings. No longer are they tacky spandex or sometimes even see through tights that some people would try to pass off as pants. Now leggings come in more variety made from different, higher quality materials. Pair leggings with an oversized sweater for a cozy casual look or choose thinner leggings to wear under a skirt or dress. Puffer JacketsThese winter jackets have had a style overhaul and are a far cry from the traditional Michelin Man shape. Choose from flashy metallics, unique silhouettes, including bold and bright prints.
The Tulle SkirtIf you're going for a more whimsical or romantic look, then a tulle skirt is a must for your holiday party attire. Pair it with a simple fitted top like a stylish tank or a button down shirt. Accessorizing with stud earrings, a necklace and a statement clutch, also makes the outfit pop. You can also wear a belt if you want to define your waist, if so, omit the necklace. Keep hair just as whimsical with something like a goddess braid or a wavy lob (long bob). Sequins (stockings, shoes, bottoms)Sequins are definitely a statement, but what you wear with them can make or break your outfit. Start out by going with the "only one" rule, meaning, wear only one piece of clothing that is sequined to avoid an overwhelming look. Pair a sequined trouser with a loose fitting blouse or a full sequined dress with a chic heel. Sequined stockings are another great way to add a bit of shimmer to an outfit. If you're not a fan of shimmery stockings, you can try sequined shoes or a sequined clutch, these can work as great statement pieces. PeplumsCute and chic are the best ways to define the peplum. You can find it on blouses, jackets, dresses and skirts. The best thing about the peplum is that it can be flattering on any body type; you just need to make sure that you create the look that suits you best. A peplum dress is an excellent way to pull off a comfortable outfit that still looks dressed up and sophisticated. If you prefer two-piece outfits, a peplum skirt paired with a slim fitting top is a great option as well. Peplum tops are another great option, which pair well with cigarette pants and heels. MenWhen attending a holiday party, keep your outfit classic and comfortable. If you're wearing a bold statement piece such a patterned pant or tie, keep your other articles of clothing to a solid colour. This is to avoid having your clothes compete with each other.
Pair a textured pant with a patterned blazer or sport jacket and make sure to keep your shirt a solid colour. If you have a more upscale party to attend, opt for a midnight blue tux instead of the traditional black and white penguin suit. With Autumn soon coming to an end and the colder months creeping up on us, finding the perfect winter coat should be on the top of your list. The thing is- there's always so many choices. Which one is best for my body type? How can I accentuate my assets? The main things that you want to look for in a winter coat are function and warmth, all while being flattering at the same time. Here's to taking out some of the guess work in finding a winter coat and actually purchasing something that works for you. Staying warm and cozy doesn't mean that you need to sacrifice style! BustyWhen you're a bit more on the busty side of things, you want to look for a coat that flatters your shape without looking top heavy. Opt for a style that is beltless because a belt can accentuate your already ample bust. Try a tailored coat with military accents or a long coat which will elongate your shape and draw the eye away from your chest. PetitsWhen you have a naturally tiny frame, you want to make sure that you select a winter coat that hugs your body in all of the right places. Avoid large bulky styles that can give you an "engulfed" look and opt for cropped coats that show off your petit shape. Also make sure that you take advantage of clothing companies that offer a selection of petit sizes that specifically cater to your body type and look age appropriate. If you haven't already started shopping in the petit section, you're truly missing out! Full-figured Full figured women can often find it daunting when looking for a winter coat that is stylish and flattering at the same time. You want to make sure that you pay attention to the fit around your arms, chest and hips with the coat zipped or buttoned up. A good way to measure comfort is to try on the winter coat with a sweater or thicker shirt on underneath, that you would usually wear under your coat. Also your sleeves should ideally go an inch past your wrist to ensure that they stay covered while you're moving. Full figured women can wear any style of winter coat and many companies carry trendy options past sizes; small, medium and large. TallTall women can sometimes find shopping for a winter coat to be a pain, which can sometimes make your retail therapy sessions backfire. You can find things in your size, but all too often you could end up with a coat that is too short for your torso, too short for your arms, or even both. This can cause the illusion of your jacket looking like it has been shrunk in the dryer.
Go for winter coats that have eye catching patterns, cinched waists, and waist cinching belts. Bright and bold patterns give you a chance to showcase something other than your height and also adds pizzazz to your look. A coat that cinches at the waist is a great way to break up your long frame and add more proportion to your torso, giving you more of an hour-glass figure. Don't forget that every body type can be accommodated and that these are just some guidelines. Always remember to have fun when choosing a winter jacket that works for you and makes you feel fabulous! ![]() Dressing while you’re pregnant can be an exciting time, but it can also come with some stress if you don't know where to start. These days, women have a wide array of trendy choices when it comes to maternity clothes and fashion. This means that choosing outfits for work, travel, social gatherings and special occasions are not like it once was. Your lifestyle can be a big factor when it comes to determining what you will be spending on your maternity wardrobe. Here are some guidelines that you can use when it comes to dressing while pregnant. Maternity Undergarments When it comes to your maternity undergarments, it’s a good idea to make sure that you are wearing the proper size. The best way to ensure proper sizing is to get professionally sized in a lingerie department or store. Most of these places have associates that are trained and ready to size you properly at no extra charge. You may find that your breasts are larger than before and with that comes extra strain on your back. This is why it is important to invest in good bras, preferably without underwire and with wider straps to support your bust more comfortably. Continue to get sized throughout your pregnancy in order to ensure that you're wearing the correct fit. For underwear, you are still able to choose from every cut such as boy shorts, Brazilian, thong, etc. Look for garments made out of cotton with a bit of stretch in them. Know that maternity underwear can still be sexy, so take advantage of the wide selection out there. Clothing Choices For Dressing While Pregnant Maternity fashion today is less about covering up your bump and more about embracing it. It has become quite common for women to seek out well-made and trendy clothes to wear throughout their pregnancy months. The best type of clothing to wear are garments that allow the abdominal area to expand without restriction, this is imperative for both mother and baby. For example, if you work in an office where business attire is required, you may want to opt for garments such as wrap dresses, light dress shirts, dress pants and/or skirts with a banded waist. You will still be able to pull off a polished look and feel comfortable. In a more casual setting, a pair of leggings could be a girl's best friend. You can pair them with a loose shirt or they can also be worn under a mini dress. Maternity shorts are also a good investment during the summer months. They offer you comfort and they also support your growing baby bump. For specialty items like outerwear and evening dresses make sure that you get them fitted properly. For jackets make sure that you purchase something with enough room for your growing bump. With evening dresses and other special occasion items, make sure to have it fitted or altered as close as possible to the wearing date. Your body goes through physical changes rapidly during pregnancy, especially during the last few months. ![]() Remember not to leave out your exercise clothes. Exercising during pregnancy is highly recommended as long as it's medically safe and doctor permitting. Maternity workout clothing should be loose fitting and airy. Stick to fabrics that are breathable and regulate body temperatures such as Lycra, cotton or spandex. Make sure that your outfit allows you to be flexible and move freely. Shoes While Pregnant Outfits during pregnancy should be comfortable and functional; your shoes aren't any different. Look for styles that provide support and allow room for your feet if they should swell. Some good choices are slip on walking shoes, flat soled boot or flat pumps. Heels are best avoided during pregnancy but if you must, wedge pumps are a great alternative. So make sure to have fun with your maternity fashion. It's a beautiful time to embrace your changing body as you bring new life into the world. Our Founder Sheila Benjamin was interviewd by The BeeHive Podcast!
